FUNERAL CIRCLE (CAN) "Funeral Circle"

This epic doom metal band goes less for utterly crushing, dirge-pace subjugation, but rather a contemplative and arabesque sense of shrouded antediluvian mystery and a ritualistic ambiance.

Guided by a hearty baritone vocalist partially resembling a mixture between classic gothic rock and Gregorian chant like in ambient folk group Isihia, Funeral Circle let riffs resound like subterranean echoes, embedded with exotic wispy melodies over which a mesmerizing voice guides compositions from ambivalent obscurity towards sublime moments of realization. In spite of their slow and elongated songwriting, they pack enough variety within to avoid becoming plod for its own sake. Clean acoustic guitar and swirling lead guitar, along with riffs that, while resonant, know when to pick up the pace, help build up to reverberant choruses that pierce through the sepulchral like miniature suns. The soloing is also quite the treat, blazing with the fiery energy of classic NWOBHM, but understanding the internal compositional boundaries that temper it into something lethal.

A combination of atmospheric immensity and experienced songwriting, this defeats even the mighty Procession sophomore album!
