PELICAN (USA) "Ataraxia/Taraxis" CD

€12.00

Pelican is one of those bands that can do no wrong. The new EP-listed-as-a-single Ataraxia/Taraxis shows a little more experimentation and fresh ideas that deviates from their last few albums. It starts off with a droning and ambient intro with acoustic guitar called “Ataraxia,” before finally heading into the meat of the EP. Ataraxia is defined as “a lucid state that is characterized by freedom from worry or any other preoccupation,” and that is precisely what this EP puts you in.

The second song “Lathe Biosas” is a track that should have been on City Of Echoes. It’s got the same sort of retrospective tone, mood and structure that the album also has. The way they string together the different elements all together, such as the guitars leading each other into the different sections and the drums just reaching out beyond the song, all points to this era.

Most of their songs are what people call “snowballs,” meaning that over the course of the song they gain momentum and, by the end, are a cataclysmic force to be reckoned with. Best example of that is the song “City Of Echoes” from the album of the same name. For a different way of approaching the instrumental post-metal genre, they go mainly acoustic on “Taraxis.”

It’s got a very unique type of groove that has a very calming effect. It still has the same type of progression that is prevalent in their songs, but with a different approach. The drums are more scaled down to fit the acoustic guitar and a second electric guitar provides some out of this world tones that expand the song. Then, about two minutes and twenty seconds in, maracas kick in to bring the piece back to the bottom, only for the acoustic guitars to pick it back up and then switch to electric-acoustic. The electric guitar now becomes a behemoth, with thick and sludgy riffs that breathes a whole new life into the song.

These guys can’t be stopped. Their eclectic blend of progressive post-metal that turns seemingly soothing and calm tracks into a cannonball is unmatched in this day and age. If you haven’t given them a listen yet, then you need to.
